Track and Build was appointed by Greater Anglia Rail to deliver the installation of a new Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) access platform at Tottenham Hale Station. Undertaken during a three-day weekend possession, the project formed part of wider station improvement works, providing a durable, lightweight and low-maintenance solution designed to enhance passenger access while supporting the long-term performance of the station infrastructure.
Working within a live railway environment demanded detailed planning, precise coordination and efficient delivery. The completed platform provides a safe, compliant asset that minimises future maintenance requirements while ensuring disruption to railway operations was kept to an absolute minimum.
Greater Anglia Rail required the installation of a new platform section that would improve accessibility while providing a robust, long-lasting solution suitable for the demands of the operational rail network.
The works needed to be completed within a tightly controlled weekend possession, requiring all activities to be carefully programmed and coordinated. Maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and compliance throughout the programme was essential, alongside delivering a finished asset ready for immediate operational use.
Track and Build developed a carefully sequenced programme that enabled all works to be completed safely and efficiently within the available possession period. Every stage of the project was planned to maximise productivity while ensuring full compliance with rail industry standards and site safety requirements.
Working closely with specialist lifting contractors and other stakeholders, the team coordinated the installation of the precast concrete foundation bases before progressing to the assembly of the new GRP platform structure. Careful planning ensured materials, equipment and personnel were available at the appropriate stages, allowing the programme to progress without unnecessary delays.
Quality assurance remained central throughout the project, with regular inspections undertaken to ensure the installation met both client expectations and operational requirements before handover.
The works commenced with the controlled excavation of the existing ballast to a depth of approximately 600–700mm, creating the required formation for the new precast concrete foundation bases.
Following installation of the foundations, the GRP structural framework was assembled before the new Everdeck GRP platform surfacing was installed, replacing approximately 40 metres of platform infrastructure. The project concluded with the application of new platform line markings, providing a safe and clearly defined passenger walking route.
The use of GRP offered several long-term benefits, including corrosion resistance, reduced maintenance requirements and rapid installation, making it an ideal solution for the operational demands of the rail environment. Throughout the works, close coordination between all parties ensured the project remained on programme while maintaining a safe working environment.
